My expertise

Heard and held

The Gram-O-Graph combines core elements of hip-hop culture — writing and rap — in an interactive drawing device that not only plays music, but visually interprets it.

Inspired by the mechanics of a turntable, the Gram-O-Graph replaces the traditional needle with a marker. As the disc rotates, music is played through an integrated Bluetooth speaker while simultaneously being captured as input. A sound sensor and an Arduino Uno process the audio signals in real time and control the speed of the stepper motors, which govern both the rotation and the drawing movement.
The resulting lines respond directly to the rhythm, volume, and dynamics of the music, generating a unique visual pattern for each track. In this way, sound is translated into a graphic trace that remains as a physical artefact. At the end, the recorded composition can be taken home as a personal “tag” — a visual memory of an acoustic experience.

Listen along

A dedicated Spotify playlist was created specifically for the Gram-O-Graph. Featuring early hip-hop classics, it accompanies the installation sonically and serves as the foundation for the data visualisation.
